Every homeowner wants to impress the neighbors with a luscious green lawn. No matter what time of year it is, here are some useful tips to keeping your grass healthy and beautiful.
1. Water Wisely
Established grass needs 1-1.5 inches of water in the spring and fall, but up to 2.5 inches in the heat of the summer. Rainfall should provide you with this in the early spring, however, during the summer, you will want to increase the sprinkler system times when the rain stops and the temperatures rise.
2. Avoid Foot Traffic
The last thing you want is to take expert care of your lawn only to have people walk over it. Make sure walkways are always clear, so people do not feel compelled to walk across your yard.
3. Mow With the Right Blade
Replace your lawnmower’s blade frequently. It should always be sharp. A dull blade can rip the grass directly out of the soil. Additionally, you never want to cut grass too short can make it difficult for the grass to grow back.
4. Monitor for Insects
You can tell you have an insect problem when one patch of grass has turned brown. At this point it will be too late, so you need to prevent an issue by applying a pesticide that will ward off bugs but keep your foliage healthy.
5. Prepare for Winter
The cold winter months can wreak havoc on a lawn. You should start preparing in the fall by applying a nutrient-rich fertilizer. A fertilizer rich in potassium and nitrogen will be ideal for allowing your grass to thrive during the winter.
