Measuring out Square, Rectangle, Triangle, and Circular Areas of Sod
To measure sod for your yard we recommend getting paper and pencil and drawing out the areas where you are going to install sod. Measure these areas and write down the measurements and the full amount of sod you will need. We highly recommend adding 3%-5% extra to make sure you have adequate sod for your project.
If you have a complex shaped yard, break it down into basic shapes and calculate each area separately.
Measuring Squares and Rectangle Sod Area
Measuring a Square Use This Formula: Length x Width = Area Examples: Square: 12 x 12 = 144 sq.ft. Rectangle: 12 x 16 = 192 sq.ft.
Measuring Circles
Measuring a Circle Use This Formula: (Radius x Radius) x 3.14 = Area Examples: Full Circle 4 x 4 = 16 x 3.14 = 50 sq.ft. Half Circle divide by 2 4 x 4 = 16 x 3.14 = 50.24 / 2 = 25 sq.ft. Quarter Circle divide by 4 4 x 4 = 16 x 3.14 = 50.24 / 4 = 12.56 sq.ft.
Measuring Triangles
Measuring a Triangle Use This Formula: Length x Width / 2 = Area Example: 20 x 10 = 200 ÷ 2 = 100 sq.ft.
